The thrilling and addictive prequel to The Pillars of the Earth--set in England at the dawn of a new era: the Middle Ages
"Just as transporting as [The Pillars of the Earth] . . . A most welcome addition to the Kingsbridge series." --The Washington Post
It is 997 CE, the end of the Dark Ages. England is facing attacks from the Welsh in the west and the Vikings in the east. Those in power bend justice according to their will, regardless of ordinary people and often in conflict with the king. Without a clear rule of law, chaos reigns.
In these turbulent times, three characters find their lives intertwined. A young boatbuilder's life is turned upside down when his home is raided by Vikings, forcing him and his family to move and start their lives anew in a small hamlet where he does not fit in. . . . A Norman noblewoman marries for love, following her husband across the sea to a new land, but the customs of her husband's homeland are shockingly different, and it soon becomes clear to her that a single misstep could be catastrophic. . . . A monk dreams of transforming his humble abbey into a center of learning that will be admired throughout Europe. And each in turn comes into dangerous conflict with a clever and ruthless bishop who will do anything to increase his wealth and power.
Thirty years ago, Ken Follett published his most popular novel, The Pillars of the Earth. Now, Follett's masterful new prequel The Evening and the Morning takes us on an epic journey into a historical past rich with ambition and rivalry, death and birth, love and hate, that will end where The Pillars of the Earth begins.

The Evening And The Morning
4By danieluniss53I have read much of Follett’s work, at least I like to think so. I enjoyed this prequel and will read book five, the end of the series. It was worth the money and the chapters have breaks in them to aid taking a break at times. Happy Reading! The Evening and The Morning
5By LoriBierlingLove this prequel. The characters draw you in from the start… you either are cheering for the good guys or literally want to throttle the bad guys! Love this author. The Evening and the Morning

5By egocentric foodeeThe Kingbridge series is an unbelievable historical revelation in literature. The author Ken Follett reveals much truth into the world during these times. It’s hard to put each book down, there is so much well written drama, true life insights, both good and evil, all giving tribute to our world history and making it come to life. He is an amazing research historian and author.Excellent Reading
5By Elizarose247It was hard to put down .Enjoyable
5By ElliotPepperI agree with other reviewers that this book has a familiar “formula” to reminiscent of other books in this series. This author has the ability to pull me into his characters World and I am reluctant to leave it. I give this book five stars because of escapism. The Evening and The Morning
4By Unhappy stillSlow to begin but “full Follett”by the end. Satisfying to have the prequel, especially if you’ve read the Cathedral series. Thanks, Ken.The evening and the morning
5By lyonsgeistI have been reading books from this site for the past 10 years and have never written a review before. Ken Follett creates a world that was, a long time ago. He creates characters that I want to know. His story captures my heart, keeping me up until the wee hours in the morning!Action, love and intrigue
5By carwill99Very fast moving and exciting. Follett at his bestAnother great novel by Follett
5By bob4261Like all the books in the series, the characters and stories get me involved. At times I can hardly stand to read what happens next because the villains always seem to win, but I can’t quit reading. His historical novels are my favorites.Struggling With an Appropriate Title
5By DLJMNSuch a roller coaster of emotions reading this book. This is full of suspense, love, hate, betrayal, fear, arrogance, anger, revenge, justice, sadness. This story has it all.The Evening and the Morning
5By Liosva27The evening and the morning. Outstanding! I first read and Re-read Pillars of the Earth and the book rivals that one. It has everything one would expect in a a great novel, love, betrayal, redemption and the constant struggle between good and evil, with only one possible outcome from that struggle. Beautifully written. Read and enjoy, I did.Long but excellent
5By read1stAs always Follett comes thru.Read it if like pillars
5By DonnieboyTGood character development. Often frustrating as in it was with pillars when good people were treated poorly and bad people got away with bad things. I like period History and Follett doesn’t disappoint again.Evening and morning
5By julesebergFantastic readingLoved this
5By Kerryr3Great story and addition to the Kings Bridge story lineOutstanding as always for Follett
5By StrutzrI keep thinking that Follett’s books cannot possibly get better and, as always, I am pleasantly disappointed that they are! I’ve read ever book of Follett’s with my first taste being Eye of the Needle some 40 years ago. Never disappointed. Always drawn in to where I feel I know all the characters personally - the good and the evil ones. This story is a riveting conclusion to the Pillars series and was a wonderful prequel.Yes and no
2By ChucksueIt’s been several years since reading Pillars of the Earth and l was intrigued with this prequel story. All the plot twists were well done but the constant sexual activity descriptions were over done! Except for the historical setting and lifestyle, I wouldn’t have finished the book. A woman’s bodice ripper by a male author. SorryAMAZING
5By tigerfromthejSuch an amazing read. Love this book. I never wanted it to end.
