Description

A brutal murder, a suspect in jail, and an execution planned—but what if the wrong person is about to be killed?

When a fellow U.S. Marshal asks Anita Blake to fly to a tiny community in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula on an emergency consult, she knows time is running short. When she arrives, there is plenty of proof that a young wereleopard killed his uncle in the most gruesome and bloody way possible. As the mounting evidence points to him, a warrant of execution is already under way.

But something seems off about the murder, and Anita has been asked for her expert opinion on the crime scene. Despite escalating pressure from local cops and the family’s cries for justice for their dead patriarch, Anita quickly realizes that the evidence doesn’t quite add up.

Time is against Anita, as the tight-knit community is up in arms and its fear of supernaturals is growing. She races to uncover the truth and determine whether the Marshals have caught the killer or are about to execute an innocent man—all in the name of justice.

  • Ehhhh not her best

I love Laurell K but 30% of her books is always repetitive unnecessary deliberation. Or it’s repeating facts from the previous book so much that you have to skip 5 pages every chapter to stay in the present of the plot line. I do love the crime solving books with Edward but this was not her best. I really wish she’d just go back to worrying the Merry Gentry books. That writing style was easier to read, more to the point and style fascinating.

I love this author. I mean I’ve re-read the books multiple times. I was so excited to see a new book in the series. This book was poorly written, full of repetitive rambling dialogue, and should’ve never been published. I don’t know what happened to her editor but please bring him or her back. I honestly can’t believe what I just read. I really do want my money back. Laurel Hamilton is one of the most interesting innovative authors I have read in a long time and I have enjoyed her books immensely. What happened? Seriously really really bad.

Every book is just as good as the first. Edge of my seat, nail biting, who me?!? Never.... *cough ok every time! I can not put the book down. This one I had a disagreement in my head about hunting with Olaf. But I am thrilled to read every book again, like it’s the first time.

I LOVE Laurell K Hamilton’s work! You can tell she does her research on everything she writes about because there is no way you can get that detailed about weapons, military stances, etc without researching first. Sometimes it even feels like I can see “beasts” inside me with how descriptive she is. Keep it up Laurell K Hamilton!! Love your work!!

For starters, I’d like to say that I REALLY liked these books in the beginning. Once they got porny and were more about sex than the monsters/crimes, she really started to lose me. Then they got really bad, and it was all redundant information, long drawn out, boring conversations, and forced dialog on how shocking her lifestyle was now. Needless to say, I was reluctant to buy this book, BUT I’m invested and after waiting two years for it, I was really hoping we’d get back to the basics. I was happy to see that it wasn’t all sex, I mean we didn’t need it cut out entirely, but we got to read something other than that so that was nice. However, this was such a long a book.....and I feel like it was mostly the redundant information and long useless conversions. I’m so tired of readying the same thing over and over. I get it. And there’s just too many men at this point. She’s needs to simplify. The character that pulled us in at the start are hardly ever in the books anymore. So frustrating. I def won’t buy the next book without reading the reviews first

I am a fan of the series and will start with the positives. First is the relationship between Olaf and Anita. I don’t understand the undeniable sexual tension between the two but it makes for great ongoing story. Also, an Edward appearance is always a treat. Haven’t enjoyed a character as much since Easy Rawlin’s friend Mouse. Both are very dangerous killers. Lastly, no Nathaniel. He’s a good character but less is more. This novel seems to telegraph a huge change in Anita’s life (besides the weddings). The negatives. The ending was rushed. I miss Jean Claude. My humble opinion is that the Anita Blake series is an action oriented mystery series with supernatural and erotica elements. It’s a tricky balance to maintain because you can’t please everyone one. Did I enjoy this novel? No but certain explorations into Anita’s inner life made it a worthwhile read.

I agree with all the other reviews. Slow until you get to the end and it’s rushed. I was looking forward to an end. I honestly felt like this was the worst book of all and I’m very sad about it.
