This is much better than some of Laurel's recent books. For a while there it seemed that she was running out of steam, plus some were almost as violent as her fairy series (sorry, can't remember anything other than Merry, as the main character's name). This one held my attention, moved nicely, had a lot of the favorite characters we've been intro'd to over the years and had some good action. It is time for Otto/Olaf to die tho. Not quickly, maybe over the course of two books? And include a fight between him and Richard! That would be good!

The fact that this was an out of state "Edward" book didn't bother me in the least. It reminded me of the early books, where it was about stopping the monsters. Those books were great, and I've read them several times. I'm hopeful that now that Anita's learned some control, the story to sex ratio will even out or maybe even pull ahead a little. If you enjoyed the books before Anita hooked up with Jean Claude and everything went horizontal, you should like this one. It was a nice change of pace.

I love the Anita Blake series but the end of this book left something missing. I liked it but was disappointed by the end.
  • Interesting but slow

I thought this was a great book. Laurel k. Hamilton brought a different side to Anita Blake out, the side we don't get to see much in the other books. We got to see her working and without all of her other lovers and that she can still go on in life without all her boyfriends around her 24/7.

I guess maybe im over the Anita Blake thing, don't know. I did not enjoy this book, or the last couple of books like I did the others. I normally can't put a book Down till I have finished it and it took me three days to finish this one. Think I will skip any new ones. Blahhhh
  • Not bad

The book wasn't the best in the series but still a good book. Can't wait for the next one!

For the avid follower of the Anita Blake series, this is a great next step in her many adventures. Same great style as all of the others that we have come to expect. I will say however, I was saddened with the abrupt and lack of tenure to the ending. Can't spoil it for those who have not yet read it, but you will truly enjoy this tale.
  • Great...but...

she never fails...its great but it felt to repetitive...the conversations with Ed were about the same and never really resolving anything... anita seemed very confused and never made decisions, wich was very strange... i feel the change that is happening im just not shure if i'll be good.... i feel just as confused as Anita!!!! lol
  • Hate to say it, but...

I am going to say that I agree with most of the comments made already. The only thing that wasn't that much of a problem for me was the fact that all the other boyfriends (Nathaniel, Jean-Claude, Micah, etc.) weren't in it. I love them all dearly, but I didn't mind the break from all of their emotional needs and drama. I am one of the many people who really, really like Edward and it was good to have another book with him as one of the main characters and the focus on the dynamics between he and Anita. Like the other readers, it felt like this book had a big build up of the ever ominous Harlequin with the Mother of All Darkness and then after other plots about psycho Olaf and the other marshals it just kind of ended. They've been bullies in the last couple books, so it shouldn't just all neatly end - poof! - with no real explanation. It did feel very rushed and completely unlike the other books that are very descriptive with time well spent in understanding the context of the story. I will continue to follow Anita with each book that comes out, but I will agree with the others and say that this was not one of the better ones.
  • Another fantastic book!

As a true Anita Blake die-hard fan, I found this book completely lacking. The plot was less than superb, the conclusion surprisingly short (leaving a lot to be desired for), and you had to wade through pages upon pages upon pages of dialogue before any real action took place. It seems as though Hamilton is just pushing out books just to push them out for money because she knows she has such a loyal fan base. If the trend continues as such, that base will quickly dwindle. Remember, the reason the Anita Blake and Princess Meredith books have been so popular is the quality with which they have been written. Let's go back to the style of writing we all love and have become so accustomed to.

As a long term fan I found this installment so far below even mediocre I was angry. Rushed? The ending just sort of laid there, the continuity with the rest of the series sucked and the characters just seemed lost. Where was the rest of the plot? Bad writer, no cookie.

Another great Anita story. LKH is a great writer and she has a great imagination. Like all the other Anita books, I found it impossible to put down till it was finished. As much as I enjoy Edward and Bernardo, I can't believe I have to wait another year for Jean Claude and Nathaniel and Richard and Asher. This Anita Blake was a good read but I've fallen in love with her men in St. Louis and this book leaves me with the feeling that "something was missing". Even though the story was sorely missing Jean Claude, it was still a great book. Thank you LKH for taking me away from the real world and drawing me into the awesome world of Anita Blake. To me, this is what being a great writer is all about. P.S. I am really glad the mother of all darkness is gone!
