Description

“Engrossing...The Pact is compelling reading.”—People

In this heart-rending tale of love and friendship, Jodi Picoult brings to life a familiar world, and in a single terrifying moment awakens every parent’s worst fear: We think we know our children . . . but do we ever really know them at all?

The Golds and the Hartes, neighbors for eighteen years, have always been inseparable. So have their children—and it’s no surprise that in high school Chris and Emily’s friendship blossoms into a moving love story. But the bonds of family, friendship, and passion—which had seemed so indestructible—suddenly threaten to unravel in the wake of an unimaginable teen tragedy.

When midnight calls from the hospital come in, no one is ready for the truth. Emily is dead at seventeen from a gunshot wound to the head. There’s a single unspent bullet in the gun that Chris pilfered from his father’s cabinet—a bullet that Chris tells police he intended for himself. But a local detective has doubts about the suicide pact that Chris describes, launching a suspenseful investigation.

This extraordinary, poignant novel paints an indelible portrait of two families in anguish . . . and creates an astonishingly suspenseful courtroom drama as Chris is put on trial for murder, bringing dark family secrets to light.

I have not read a single book by Jodi Picoult that was not well written, full of suspense, well researched and just great! I will always buy her books! She is one of my favorite authors.

As an avid reader I was aware that Jodi Picoult was a popular author, but I had never read any of her books. After reading The Pact it was obvious that I had been missing out. I’ve already grabbed several of her other books, and intend to start one of them after finishing The Pact about 10 minutes ago. She’s a talented writer, and I love that she takes on tough topics which so urgently need to see the light of day. I’m not only a new fan, but really wish I could be a “morning walk buddy”.

This is the book I read that was recommended to me by my senior English teacher. 11 years later, Picoult is still my favorite author.

My favorite book ever, I don't like rereading books since I know how it ends, but I have read this book three times so far. It is truly inspiring. All of Picoult's books are amazing but this is by far my favorite.

I only just started reading J. Picoult's novels and before reading The Pact I decided to pick up one of her most recent works: House Rules. I enjoyed reading the latter but it was not a life changing read nor did it incline me to pick up another novel of hers. I gave The Pact a chance due to the positive reviews it received and I have to admit that this was a great, well written book. The writing just flows and leads the reader from one page to the next with ease. I highly recommend this book!

This astonishing must-read captured me. I've been a fan of this author for sometime. It's amazing how realistic her fiction can be. You could easily replace the character with someone you know.
