"The reigning queen of STEM romance."—The Washington Post
An Indie Next and Library Reads Pick!
Rival physicists collide in a vortex of academic feuds and fake dating shenanigans in this delightfully STEMinist romcom from the New York Times bestselling author of The Love Hypothesis and Love on the Brain.
The many lives of theoretical physicist Elsie Hannaway have finally caught up with her. By day, she’s an adjunct professor, toiling away at grading labs and teaching thermodynamics in the hopes of landing tenure. By other day, Elsie makes up for her non-existent paycheck by offering her services as a fake girlfriend, tapping into her expertly honed people-pleasing skills to embody whichever version of herself the client needs.
Honestly, it’s a pretty sweet gig—until her carefully constructed Elsie-verse comes crashing down. Because Jack Smith, the annoyingly attractive and arrogant older brother of her favorite client, turns out to be the cold-hearted experimental physicist who ruined her mentor’s career and undermined the reputation of theorists everywhere. And he’s the same Jack Smith who rules over the physics department at MIT, standing right between Elsie and her dream job.
Elsie is prepared for an all-out war of scholarly sabotage but…those long, penetrating looks? Not having to be anything other than her true self when she’s with him? Will falling into an experimentalist’s orbit finally tempt her to put her most guarded theories on love into practice?
Reviews
some of the best banter I’ve ever read
4By Emi McClungThis book was so good! In my top ten this year so farSmart Love with a Side of Cheese
4By gelzabellSmart, sweet, and just a bit cheesy (get it? Haha)—in a good way. I loved the academic setting and the science-y bits, and I appreciated the focus on women in STEM and their struggles. The characters were too genius-level and emotionally self-aware to feel real. Overall, it was a fun, nerdy romance with a healthy dynamic and a lot of heart.I laughed. I cried.
5By ladibgzLove. Love. Love. Funny. Emotional. Smart.9/10
5By touisiaThis book was amazing. I’ve gotten reviews saying this was more of a hard down enemies to lovers trope, but it wasn’t hard on. They argued but wasn’t enemies. Elsie was a slow burning. It was a lot of science talk, if you’re not into that then i don’t think it’s best to read but nonetheless, it was an amazing book, i think you should still read it.boring

5By CaptainProasheckThat one hit home for me.Meh…
3By Betta FabbinaeI’m not a fan…. I have red 3 of her books (love hypothesis, not in love, and love theoretically), and none of them stood out to me. As a “chronic” re-reader none of this books made me want to re-read them. I only one I thought was pretty good was love hypothesis, but still I didn’t like it enough to re-read it. I personally wouldn’t recommend this books to other people. So I wouldn’t get it if I were you….(no hate to the author!)Good but slow
3By Lexi6158The beginning was so slow and to much science talk for me. Eventually when it picked up it was really good. The perfect read
5By sasboydThis book was everything. Snarky FMC. Great banter. The storyline flowed, albeit the twist was predictable. It was a perfect quick read to make your heart flutter in just the right way.Loved it!
5By schnauzers foreverGreat reading, I loved the characters in this book. Cannot wait to read all her other booksSTEM love

5By littlemrswilsonThe beginning was a little slow but other than that I loved it! I loved the bantering, the closeness, the finding of self, and the encouragement that was in the book. I can really relate to Elsie. Really recommend!!Obsessed

5By reviewer561I feel everything. This book was spectacular. I’ve never felt so connected to a character and found all of the supporting characters so thoroughly well-written and enjoyable in all the right ways.Very good
5By valentina1906Such an adorable book as always the main character is super funny. The male character I think is the best of all her books well honestly they all are ali is just the best at writing the best MMCThe ending was better
3By Skyker FaithIt took so long to get into romance, and maybe that’s how it was supposed to be, but I felt that there was just more scientific talk than anything else.Elsie is all of us
4By Tryin to help234I was pleasantly surprised by this book, i did not love “Love Hypothesis,” and was skeptical to read another work by Ali. But this book was absolutely hilarious and Elsie was so relatable. Hazelwood has an amazing talent for making me laugh out loud and also cry a little. The hype was worth this book, and I could not set it down.Loved This Book For Real
4By Courtney307As a STEM girly myself, this was amazing!
