Description
From the New York Times bestselling author of The Giver of Stars and the forthcoming Someone Else's Shoes, a post-WWII story of the war brides who crossed the seas by the thousands to face their unknown futures
1946. World War II has ended and all over the world, young women are beginning to fulfill the promises made to the men they wed in wartime.
In Sydney, Australia, four women join 650 other war brides on an extraordinary voyage to England—aboard HMS Victoria, which still carries not just arms and aircraft but a thousand naval officers. Rules are strictly enforced, from the aircraft carrier’s captain down to the lowliest young deckhand. But the men and the brides will find their lives intertwined despite the Navy’s ironclad sanctions. And for Frances Mackenzie, the complicated young woman whose past comes back to haunt her far from home, the journey will change her life in ways she never could have predicted—forever.
Reviews
Slow read…
2By goodwin4566I love her other books, but this one was dull and predictable. The characters were never brought into clear focus and the story dragged on and on until the last 1/4 of the book. From that point on, it was so predictable and then the characters were trying to be brought to life in a way that should have happened earlier. The ship of brides
5By siewertsreadCouldn’t put it down!Solid read - learned something new!
4By EnglishMajorProblemsHad no idea ships of brides actually existed. Enjoyed the historical aspect of the book without feeling bored (sadly I can’t get with historical nonfiction). Wish the little dog made itThe Ship of Brides
2By CherylmorbuxNot my favorite Jojo novel; slow and rather anticlimactic.Wonderful Book!
5By Wyoming AnneThis was the first Jojo Moyes book I read, and I absolutely loved it! It was a topic I never really thought about - war brides - but I was drawn in to the story. I also appreciated one of the morals - not to be judgmental. I don't recommend a lot of books, but this is one I did.Slow to start but I fell in love!
5By BPF72I had trouble getting into this one - lots of characters to remember and just slow to start overall - but about 100 pages in I couldn't put it down! Loved the characters and learning about that period in history! Truly enjoyed it and glad I pushed through until it got really good.Unexpected historic novel. Lovely!
5By Olimary1Couldn't stop reading it for one second. Such an interesting and unexpected setting and story that kept my eyes glued to the book. Loved the characters. To this day I can't stop thinking about Frances and all the brides' journey to the unknown. Fabulous! Must read. After 'Me before you' this is my favorite from Jojo Moyes.Ship of Brides is a winner
5By SandymemeThis was the third book I have read by this author and it was very different from the other two (Me Before You and One Plus One). Still, I enjoyed this unconventional love story very much and admire JoJo Moyes' style of writing. The author's attention to detail and character development brought the story to life.
