Description

From a multi-USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling author comes this romantasy (romantic fantasy), the first in a 6-book series.

“This fantasy novel is simply the most captivating I remember reading in decades of fantasy books.”

“It has been years and years since I have stayed up all night, literally, to read a book!”

“An exceptional story plot with characters who are written in a manner that makes them feel so real”

“How does Ms. Archer create pure magic so easily!? This is one of the best books that she has ever written!”

The king's magnificent palace was built in a matter of weeks. No one saw the builders, no villagers are allowed beyond the gilded gate, and only one servant has ever left. The haunted look in her eyes as she was recaptured by the palace guards is something Josie, daughter of the village healer, has never forgotten.

For Josie, the palace is a mystery that grows more intriguing after she meets the captain of the guards, a man known only as Hammer, as mysterious and captivating as the palace itself. Whispers of magic fuel Josie's desire to uncover the truth, but an ordinary girl like her can only dream of ever being invited inside.

When the king decides to take a wife from among the eligible daughters of the noble families, the palace gates are finally thrown open and the kingdom's elite pour in. In a court where old rivalries and new jealousies collide, the king's favorite is poisoned, and the healer is summoned. As her father's assistant, Josie finally sees inside the lavish walls, but she soon learns the palace won't surrender its secrets easily, for not a single resident, from the lowest servant to the king himself, has a memory from before the palace existed.

In her quest to help the servants, Josie becomes embroiled in courtly intrigues alongside the enigmatic captain. As their feelings for each other grow, the hopelessness of their situation becomes apparent. How can she love a man who doesn’t know his own past?

To make matters worse, they discover that ending the enchantment will shake the very foundations of the kingdom, and destroy everything Josie holds dear.

I liked the mystery, suspense and touch of romance. I liked the intelligence of the main characters & that it wasn’t a dumb smutty story.

This was a wonderful story building up and then it abruptly ended. This is why it’s a four-star and not a five. It would’ve been nice to be let down more gracefully at the end with a slight build up of a story that encourages us to buy book 2. I know the author wants us to buy book two but needs to understand the investment we have in Book One’s story.

I thought this was a great beginning! I loved Josie and enjoyed following her as she gets to know the residents of the palace especially the Captain of the Guard. The Mystery was also well written and very intriguing. I was a little bummed that although one of the mysteries of the book was solved the main one was not it continues on in the next book. Having said that I am greatly looking forward to the next book in this series!

I could not seem to put this book down. The slow building passion between the captain & Josie is absolutely riveting. The mystery of the lost memories and who the poisoner was had my nose stuck in the book every chance I got. Absolutely love!

This book was very interesting. It had many twists and turns and ended way to soon! CJ Archer does a good way of weaving the characters and plot together. I had trouble putting it down at night! I look forward to reading more from this author!

Amazing! The storyline is cool, and the characters are very well designed! Josie and Dane practically stick together the whole time, quite sweet.

Part way through the book the writing seems rushed and the book is very mild and doesnt explain the real conflict at all. The conflict is the memories, otherwise describe the book as about poisoning instead. Too many story lines going for such a short book

The world building and witty banter were easily the highlights of this book. While for the most part I enjoyed the story, the last sixty pages or so felt rushed, like the author realized they were approaching the 600 page mark and hadn’t set up everything she wanted to or really progressed the main conflict at all. I am also disappointed to see a great protagonist like Josie go from aspiring doctor resisting the patriarchy with a penchant for learning, to bored girl resigned to systemic sexism who just wants to be with Captain. It is worth emphasizing that this is the first of a six book series and does not stand alone very well. Although it doesn’t end in that obvious cliff hanger made just to get you to buy the next book, it’s in the same vein in that this book didn’t really have a resolution. At best this was a “set up” book in that the author inserts conflict, after conflict, after conflict that may or may not be explored or resolved to varying degrees of depth if at all in later books. After reading the reviews and free first 50 pages of the other books, I’m not convinced reading the rest of the series would be worth the investment.

I liked this book a lot. It was a good read and had lots of layers and an in-depth world. The characters were great, they had good relationships and pretty believable ambitions despite being in a twisted world. It’s an easy read with good concepts and some thoughts about how woman and men are treated differently in society. It wasn’t life changing but it was worth the day of on and off reading I put into it.

The Palace of Lost Memories is the first book in a series of 6. While I normally only occasionally buy books in a series due to the cost, I’m so glad I started this one! I was immediately drawn into this fantasy world by the descriptive writing that allowed me to envision the village of Mull, the palace, the Peninsula and the people. For me, this was a real page-turner that I didn’t want to put down until I was finished. Now I can’t wait to move onto book two! In my opinion, if you enjoy good fantasy and don’t mind a 6-book series, I’d highly suggest getting this book. It was a fantastic read pushing me onward to book 2!
