Description

It was the most fashionable place to stay in London, until murder made a reservation. Solve the puzzle in this new cozy historical murder mystery from USA Today bestselling author of the Glass and Steele series.

December 1899. After the death of her beloved grandmother, Cleopatra Fox moves into the luxury hotel owned by her estranged uncle in the hopes of putting hardship and loneliness behind her. But the poisoning of a guest on Christmas eve throws her new life, and the hotel, into chaos.

Cleo quickly realizes no one can be trusted, not Scotland Yard and especially not the hotel’s charming assistant manager. With the New Year’s Eve ball approaching fast and the hotel’s reputation hanging by a thread, Cleo must find the killer before the ball, and the hotel itself, are ruined. But catching a murderer proves just as difficult as navigating the hotel’s hierarchy and the peculiarities of her family.

Can Cleo find the killer before the new century begins? Or will someone get away with murder?

MURDER AT THE MAYFAIR HOTEL is the first book in a cozy mystery series by USA Today bestselling author C.J. Archer.

I was not sure about this series. I love the authors other work but this was slow to catch on for me. I’m glad I stuck with it because the series becomes so much better!

I was initially intrigued when I read this book’s description but half way through began to get annoyed with the main character. She comes across quite presumptuous as she has the audacity to think she can do a better job (or the only one) in solving the murder than the police.

Delightful. Slow but highly interesting. I never solved who did it until Cleo Fox informed me. I guess I have to buy her next one.

The story is enjoyable and keeps one's interest to see what happens. Goodness wins over evil which so many of today's writers ignore, then wonder why our present society is so messed up. Thank you. Fran

Cleopatra Fox reluctantly accepts her aunt and uncle’s offer to move into the hotel they own. Though she wishes to earn her keep, her uncle quickly informs her that he expects no more from her than from his own daughter. Despite being counseled to live a life of leisure, Cleo chooses to try to help by trying to unravel the mystery behind the death of a guest. Her inquiries help her introduce herself to staff and guests alike, but they also lead to bad outcomes for some of her new acquaintances. While the setting and story intrigued me, a couple of the characters seemed inconsistent in their behavior. I also found myself pulled out of the story quite a few times by poor word choices that distracted from or contradicted the ongoing action in a scene.

To be fair, I really liked Cleo at the beginning, and then it just went down hill. She kept getting angry at people for assuming things and then she would go off and do just that. She was a hypocrite in so many ways. The mystery itself was great, and the writing was lovely. I will try out the sequel to see if Cleo gets better though.
