Description
In the latest thriller from New York Times bestseller Riley Sager, a woman returns to the house made famous by her father’s bestselling horror memoir. Is the place really haunted by evil forces, as her father claimed? Or are there more earthbound—and dangerous—secrets hidden within its walls?
What was it like? Living in that house.
Maggie Holt is used to such questions. Twenty-five years ago, she and her parents, Ewan and Jess, moved into Baneberry Hall, a rambling Victorian estate in the Vermont woods. They spent three weeks there before fleeing in the dead of night, an ordeal Ewan later recounted in a nonfiction book called House of Horrors. His tale of ghostly happenings and encounters with malevolent spirits became a worldwide phenomenon, rivaling The Amityville Horror in popularity—and skepticism.
Today, Maggie is a restorer of old homes and too young to remember any of the events mentioned in her father's book. But she also doesn’t believe a word of it. Ghosts, after all, don’t exist. When Maggie inherits Baneberry Hall after her father's death, she returns to renovate the place to prepare it for sale. But her homecoming is anything but warm. People from the past, chronicled in House of Horrors, lurk in the shadows. And locals aren’t thrilled that their small town has been made infamous thanks to Maggie’s father. Even more unnerving is Baneberry Hall itself—a place filled with relics from another era that hint at a history of dark deeds. As Maggie experiences strange occurrences straight out of her father’s book, she starts to believe that what he wrote was more fact than fiction.
Reviews
Good book with twists and turns
4By makaela1233The book was a good easy read. Slightly predictable but did a great job on the spooky factor with a happy ending. It was okay…
2By Chronic SchizophreniaIt was entertaining for a while, but predictable. The writing was simple and elementary. If you’re looking for something complex, move along. However, if you want something PG that’s a tiny bit spooky, then this is the right book for you.G R E A T
4By EliseOreoIt was a very fun, very wild ride! Loved it!!Sager did it again
4By Kayloni BrynLove Sager’s writing. Home before dark is another captivating piece of literature that I couldn’t put down. Love the main character just as I did in “the house across the lake” a strong woman determined to find the truth. Recommend all of Segar’s work so far haven’t been dissatisfied.Enjoyed it!
3By brock_zahlerA great thriller with some interesting turns at the end! For me, the ghost/no ghost question was simultaneously the best and worst thing about this. I’d recommend to thriller fans! Riley never misses.Unlikeable characters
3By oechsle1Cool and complicated story. Found all characters to be annoying and cheesy.Loved

4By slayyy42it was captivating sure but I was expecting some sleepless nights and all i really got was a little jumpy from little noises. SPOILER SPOILER once it was clear there was no real supernatural stuff going on, it got kinda boring and the small amount of fear i felt went away. SPOILER SPOILERGreat read

5By JeanivvThis book was fantastic. Couldn’t put it down.OH MY GOSHHHH
5By OddrieanneThis was hands down the best book I’ve ever read. I almost exclusively read psychological thrillers (since 2013) but I wanted something a little more. So when I saw this book described as a psychological thriller and HORROR I was sold. It was a wild ride to say the least. Oh my gosh… I am smiling just writing this and reflecting on the book. I had full body chills towards the end of the story and I often times had to stop reading because I was getting scared haha :) I recommend this book to lovers of psychological thrillers, scary stories and plot twists. And I just want throw in one more “oh my goshhhhh” :-DA+

5By AmyBethM97i think i read this in a total of three days. i even brought my ipad with me on my morning walk when i had almost finished it. this story will have you tensing every muscle in your body and have you looking over your shoulder, just in case. creaking noises, shadows, glimmers of things that aren’t actually there (or are they?) the whole nine yards of what’s needed to write a fantastic ghost story. this is the first i’ve read of riley sagers work, and i’ll definitely be reading more.I can’t figure out the high rating
1By Jessiep813This was total trash. I wasn’t scared or curious once and once I finished I was mad I pushed through. I read reviews that people needed to wake their spouse so they could finish and I’m floored. Total wasteThis author never ceases to amaze me
5By kaykaybean13One of my favorite thriller mystery writers of all time, another book written by this clever, incredibly intelligent plot twister and nearly an unbelievable calculating mindset of where they’re misleading the readers giving them the faintest hint of perhaps a clue that in other books would be the telling clue and solving factors yet have an uncanny and quite spectacular way of giving the reader an immersive &captivating experience with so many twists and whiplash turns in the plots and the latest culprit that you’re completely awestruck. The books are so well done that the author seamlessly and seemingly effortlessly builds to the climactic revelations and drops the shock and awe so brutally that it leaves you dumbfounded albeit equally astonished at this adept ability, high caliber of skill and dynamic complexities of the characters and the spellbinding thirst to know who’s causing the havoc in the stories that will undoubtedly leave all lovers of this genre yearning for more. Author is fascinating at what they do. And no one is quite as clever or as cultivated as this phenomenon. Your heart races, you become convinced you’ve got the score on the one behind the mysterious chaos and you are once again masterminded and outwitted by one of the very best, in my opinion.
