"Propulsive ... a dizzying Gothic whodunit."
—New York Times Book Review
Bestselling author Riley Sager returns with a Gothic chiller about a young caregiver assigned to work for a woman accused of a Lizzie Borden-like massacre decades earlier.
At seventeen, Lenora Hope
Hung her sister with a rope
Now reduced to a schoolyard chant, the Hope family murders shocked the Maine coast one bloody night in 1929. While most people assume seventeen-year-old Lenora was responsible, the police were never able to prove it. Other than her denial after the killings, she has never spoken publicly about that night, nor has she set foot outside Hope’s End, the cliffside mansion where the massacre occurred.
Stabbed her father with a knife
Took her mother’s happy life
It’s now 1983, and home-health aide Kit McDeere arrives at a decaying Hope’s End to care for Lenora after her previous nurse fled in the middle of the night. In her seventies and confined to a wheelchair, Lenora was rendered mute by a series of strokes and can only communicate with Kit by tapping out sentences on an old typewriter. One night, Lenora uses it to make a tantalizing offer—I want to tell you everything.
“It wasn’t me,” Lenora said
But she’s the only one not dead
As Kit helps Lenora write about the events leading to the Hope family massacre, it becomes clear there’s more to the tale than people know. But when new details about her predecessor’s departure come to light, Kit starts to suspect Lenora might not be telling the complete truth—and that the seemingly harmless woman in her care could be far more dangerous than she first thought.
Reviews
One succesful twist with 7 unnecessary ones
4By gabetingsThe story kept me engaged and the reveal of the big twist made me circle back and reread previous sections to find the overarching connections and subtle details I missed upon my first read. However, the numerous twists afterwards felt more like “attention grabbers” rather than twists with concrete reasoning and subtle hints to support them. But aside from that, I enjoyed the book and it’s what got me hooked to start reading again!Just do it
5By Kiki3636Such a great readAmazing
1By bmcdoug2I’m being honest when I say this. I don’t remember the last time I read a book. I know I read one maybe two books in high school. But that was the last time My friends and I started a book club together and I really didn’t want to join because I never liked reading. I decided to give it a try. This is the book that they wanted to read. It was soo GOOD!!! The twists, the mystery, and theories were just amazing. I enjoyed this book. This author pulls you in. He makes you think. I’m so excited to keep on reading and ready to read his next bookWow
5By EvassoloLayers and layers of story until the last word. What a thrill!Pretty good!
4By adip2017I overall really enjoyed this! I was honestly leaning towards a higher rating until I got to the end which seemed to just ramble on. The plot line was SO good but towards the end it felt like there were too many twists/surprises that it irritated me. Still a really good read and worth the time invested. Character development was great and keeps you turning pages, I finished this in about 2 sittings. Looking forward to another read by this author!5/5
