“Irresistible . . . High drama at the beach, starring four sexy, surfing siblings and their deadbeat, famous-crooner dad.”—People

ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The Washington Post, Time, Marie Claire, PopSugar, Parade, Teen Vogue, Self, She Reads

Four famous siblings throw an epic party to celebrate the end of the summer. But over the course of twenty-four hours, the family drama that ensues will change their lives forever.

Malibu: August 1983. It’s the day of Nina Riva’s annual end-of-summer party, and anticipation is at a fever pitch. Everyone wants to be around the famous Rivas: Nina, the talented surfer and supermodel; brothers Jay and Hud, one a championship surfer, the other a renowned photographer; and their adored baby sister, Kit. Together the siblings are a source of fascination in Malibu and the world over—especially as the offspring of the legendary singer Mick Riva.

The only person not looking forward to the party of the year is Nina herself, who never wanted to be the center of attention, and who has also just been very publicly abandoned by her pro tennis player husband. Oh, and maybe Hud—because it is long past time for him to confess something to the brother from whom he’s been inseparable since birth.

Jay, on the other hand, is counting the minutes until nightfall, when the girl he can’t stop thinking about promised she’ll be there.

And Kit has a couple secrets of her own—including a guest she invited without consulting anyone.

By midnight the party will be completely out of control. By morning, the Riva mansion will have gone up in flames. But before that first spark in the early hours before dawn, the alcohol will flow, the music will play, and the loves and secrets that shaped this family’s generations will all come rising to the surface.

Malibu Rising is a story about one unforgettable night in the life of a family: the night they each have to choose what they will keep from the people who made them . . . and what they will leave behind.

Really enjoyed this book but the reference to a fire is misleading.

Well written, certainly a bit of a fantasy yet the sibling relationships were fun to read through. Definite easy beach read.

I’ll always be a sucker for a TJR book. I appreciated how the storyline moves from the past to the present. It helps to see to whole picture. TJR is so good at writing books that make you feel such anger, suspense, and sadness. This read was no different. I would recommend to anyone!!

Such a good book. The author is a great storyteller and I was happy with the ending. I felt attached to all the characters and I feel like they all got their own unique happy endings.

Not great but I finished it. I did skip through some of the long drawn out parts. I do agree with a previous reviewer that there were too many characters and too much information about them.

I really enjoyed this book. I found the story and the characters to be well developed and interesting. The timeline was fun, the backstory of the parents helped to build the siblings bond. I did wonder about the detail given to some side characters later on, but it’s makes the ending more memorable. All in all great book. Highly recommend.

I thought it had too many characters and unnecessary details that detracted from the story. I like the Rivas and I couldn’t wait to see how it turned out.
  • Great story.

The initial premise about the family started well. But this book is all over the place, and has so much is fluff and unnecessary tangents. The whole party scene is so disjointed and goes off on so many tangents that I found myself skipping through paragraphs.
  • Such an amazing story!

I couldn’t put this book down and stayed up all night until I finished it. And what a finish! I could identify with so many elements in this story as a native southern Californian who grew up during the same years. I felt like the author truly understood and was able to write so eloquently about what it was really like back then and similar hurtful experiences, pain endured, and growth enjoyed during those years. I loved it and, for some reason, my soul feels cleansed. The ending was perfect!
  • Good but…

I enjoyed this book a lot. Especially growing up not far from Malibu pulled at my heartstrings and I connected with the main character but I feel like the ending was rushed and expected more. Good read but I will say I enjoyed Daisy and the Six more.
