Description

“A lusty, rollicking seventeenth-century adventure. . . . History as entertainment.” —USA Today

In this New York Times bestselling novel, master of suspense Michael Crichton delivers an irresistible tale of swashbuckling pirates in the New World—a classic story of treasure and betrayal.

The Caribbean, 1665. A remote colony of the English Crown, the island of Jamaica holds out against the vast supremacy of the Spanish empire. Port Royal, its capital, is a cutthroat town of taverns, grog shops, and bawdy houses. In this steamy climate there’s a living to be made, a living that can end swiftly by disease—or by dagger. For Captain Charles Hunter, gold in Spanish hands is gold for the taking, and the law of the land rests with those ruthless enough to make it.

Pirate Latitudes is Michael Crichton at his best: a brilliant adventure tale pulsing with relentless action, crackling atmosphere, and heart-pounding suspense.

To much of the book feels like an outline of ideas with intentions to expand on in a later revision. I still enjoyed it.

What a wonderful piece of historical fiction! Certainly worth the time to read. Crichton is as masterful as ever, even posthumous.

Perhaps it wasn't crichtons "best." Who cares? I loved every word. Great adventure. Wonderful revenge. The best is Captain Blood, but this isn't far behind.

Great fun read. Most 14 year old white boys will like it. Seems like it was based on true history yet i doubt the part about the kraken,

Excellent read. You are captured by the story almost instantly, drawn in by the adventurous characters that joyfully stir your imagination. If you are at all a fan of the expeditions of Captain Jack Sparrow then you will enjoy this book.

Much too short and something I don't think Michael Crichton would've had published. There just doesn't seem to be much transitioning between events in the book. The book almost seems geared to teenagers if you take out some of the adult events. Save your money and let this ship sail.

Clean prose. Straightforward dialogue. Exciting plot and engaging characters. Should have been a much longer book. A lot packed into a short read. Wanted more.
  • Good Pirate Tale!

This is an exciting, well-researched pirate story. It strains credibility but that's not the point - it's just a fun read. It tells the story of a pirate raid in the Caribbean in the 17th Century. Everything that can go wrong does. Captain Hunter is repeatedly placed in unescapable situations...and then he escapes from them! I suspect Crichton never published it because of similarities with Pirates of the Caribbean.
  • Really Great

I believe this was published posthumously. It's sad to think there won't be any more from this great author. Who else puts so much energy into the technology behind the story? I'm re-reading Timeline now and it's better this time than it was the first time.
  • Very fun read!
