Description

In the vein of Jurassic Park, this high-concept thriller follows a group of graduate students lured to Hawaii to work for a mysterious biotech company—only to find themselves cast out into the rain forest, with nothing but their scientific expertise and wits to protect them.

In the lush forests of Oahu, groundbreaking technology has ushered in a revolutionary era of biological prospecting, feeding a search for priceless drugs and applications on a scale beyond anything previously imagined. In Cambridge, Massachusetts, seven graduate students at the forefront of their fields are recruited by a pioneering microbiology start-up, Nanigen MicroTechnologies, which dispatches the group to a mysterious lab in Hawaii. But once in the rainforest, the scientists are thrust into a hostile wilderness that reveals surprising dangers at every turn. Armed only with their knowledge of the natural world, they find themselves prey to a technology of radical and unbridled power

An instant classic, Micro pits nature against technology in vintage Michael Crichton fashion. Completed by visionary science writer Richard Preston, this boundary-pushing thriller melds scientific fact with pulse-pounding fiction to create yet another masterpiece of sophisticated, cutting-edge entertainment.

More great literature from Mc’s mind. Didn’t know much about Preston but intrigued to read more.

But even worse than the cheesy Rick Moranis movie by Disney. An eye rolling “twist” halfway through with a rushed ending that provides no substance except a typical Crichton one liner that obviously alludes to a coming sequel 🙄

Smartly written as usual, edge of your seat plot twists, fast paced. Mr. Crichton’s writing puts you right in the action and you feel every word just as the character does. It’s an amazing last novel by one of the best and smartest authors of the last half of the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty first. He’s certainly missed but his amazing body of work will endure forever.

I started this book the day it came out and finished it a day or two later, and it was an EXCELLENT book. While some of it was written not by Crichton but by Richard Preston, Preston himself is an excellent and accomplished writer. Reading a book written by the both of them was even better!

I loved it. I couldn’t stop. Michael Crichton is such a deep writer. Finished it in 1 day! Must recommend for any Michael Crichton fan for sure.

Very interesting idea.. The book started off good but mid-way through, it became dull and the ending was just flat--I almost fall asleep :(

Very disappointing. Not at all up to what I expect from Crichton. At least Jurassic Park was somewhat plausible. This book is not.

Michael Crichton's books always bring out information about new technological ideas for the reader to think about, to see the potential good as well as the downside uses. This tale of fiction does this well, immersing the reader in a new way of seeing the world. He gets you hooked, and then it's hard to put it back down! Good story!

The concept of Micro could have been fascinating, but the novel is a mess from start to finish, especially the ending. The characters are like cartoon figures and the plot goes round and round with little interest. I so enjoyed Michael Crichton's past writing. It's a shame this book was published at all. Instead of ending his bright career with a strong novel, Micro leaves it with a big black mark.

I got to believe Michael Crichton is tossing in his grave. I am losing the battle with myself to always finish the book you have started and since I am writing this review one can assume I lost.
  • It's obvious where Mr. Preston took over

It started out really good, science based (as expected with MC), and entertaining. The opening chapter alone hooked me right away. Yet, as the story went on, I found myself not really caring about what happened next, I loved "Timeline" and "Prey" for these reasons. As the books continues...you just keep saying in a sarcastic way, "REALLY!?" The ending was horrible...it would have been different if MC finished the project himself. Worth the read? Yes. Is it gonna blow your mind? Meh...it's a fun way to pass the time instead of watching TV.

This book had a lot of potential to be a very good story, but it turned out to be predictable at best. Unlike some of your other hits this book was slow and the story line hard to swallow. Sorry but after such good books like Jurassic Park this story lacked excitement.

  • Great Idea, Flawed Delivery

Crichton always fascinates me with his sci-fi prowess. Coming up with new and fascinating ways to incorporate alien worlds into real life-ish contexts. This is another example, it's 'Honey I Shrunk The Kids' meets 'Jurassic Park' meets 'Saw'. Its a visceral and an intriguing subject, seeing the world from a different vantage but it comes with all of the normal - 'race against the clock' clichés however I'm actually ok with that. The problem is the delivery just falls flat, I have no issues with there being 'a lot of characters' as some have pointed out, most survival/adventure stories involve 7 or 8 characters all being picked off one by one (think: The Poseidon Adventure, or The Towering Inferno) however it did seem a bit far fetched that each person working in these labs were über-intelligent yet in very specific fields that of course would come in handy in intervals of the story. Some of the situations felt too contrived like a film that cuts out important plot points to fit into a 90 minute format. But if you can overlook those contrivances there is true suspense to be had. Not to give away too much more of the story, suffice it to say its a quick and satisfying read that ultimately will not go down in history as an all-time great. It's just another case of big idea, SMALL delivery.
