Past midnight, Chyna Shepard, twenty-six, gazes out a moonlit window, unable to sleep on her first night in the Napa Valley home of her best friend’s family. Instinct proves reliable. A murderous sociopath, Edgler Foreman Vess, has entered the house, intent on killing everyone inside. A self-proclaimed “homicidal adventurer,” Vess lives only to satisfy all appetites as they arise, to immerse himself in sensation, to live without fear, remorse, or limits, to live with intensity. Chyna is trapped in his deadly orbit.
Chyna is a survivor, toughened by a lifelong struggle for safety and self-respect. Now she will be tested as never before. At first her sole aim is to get out alive—until, by chance, she learns the identity of Vess’s next intended victim, a faraway innocent only she can save. Driven by a newly discovered thirst for meaning beyond mere self-preservation, Chyna musters every inner resource she has to save an endangered girl . . . as moment by moment, the terrifying threat of Edgler Foreman Vess intensifies.

5By Rastadog2007My title says it all. Great story, but its so detailed that you find yourself thinking , I should close my eyes for this part.Incredible
5By NeiccareeThis book was quite literally "intense". I loved every second and the main character fit herself right into my heart. I found myself crying as she cried and laughing along with her as well. The ending was built up by a string of rising action that had me on the edge of my seat. I highly recommend this to any horror novel enthusiast. The antagonist is terrifying and unrelenting. And incredible piece of writing that I'll likely read again and again.Lydia
5By MarystillinsaneIt was definitely Intense! On the edge of my seat. A great ride!Tried too hard to be intense
3By Msi46Yes, very intense! Some of the descriptions of suffering became almost tedious and too many stupid decisions by Chyna.Titled was right on!!!
5By Neecy WatsonOne of my favorite books. First read it in hard cover than bought it again in ebook. This book I couldn’t put down!!! High intensive cat and mouse chase. My heart was beating fast in so many parts while the female protagonist fought to stay alive. Wow!!!! Worth the purchase. The definition of intensity!!!
5By ES the horror fanDean Koontz definitely gave this book the right title! I am a huge fan of his work because I love mysteries and thrillers as much as I love horror novels—and, in my mind, Koontz is an author of both. In this masterfully written suspense novel, he takes the mystery-thriller to its most extreme! Often, when I’ve thought of this book since reading it, I’ve said that it would be a perfect match for fans of really scary mysteries OR horror novels! It’s just that scary!!! A strong recommendation for all fans of the book: If you also like scary movies, I highly recommend the movie adaptation of this book, a 90s miniseries. This faithful adaptation of the book, starring Molly Parker and John C. McGinley, is nearly as terrifying as the book!!!👍🏻👍🏻Intensity was awesome
5By awsonem thingI’m 33 and just decided to try to read a book to pass the time instead of constantly watching tv. I’m so glad that I started with this one. I was on the end of my seat most of the time. Every time I put it down I was wondering what would happen next. Awesome book. It set the bar very high for the rest of my read.Warning: Thus book causes chest pain and shortness of breath!
5By SteelervilleThis book messed me up. This is the closest I’ve ever come to skipping to the end just to see what happens. I couldn’t take it. I wanted to read it and throw down at the same time. Intensity as a title for this story was an understatement.
