Description

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The eighth book in Diana Gabaldon’s acclaimed Outlander saga, the basis for the Starz original series.

“Features all the passion and swashbuckling that fans of this historical fantasy series have come to expect.”—People

1778: France declares war on Great Britain, the British army leaves Philadelphia, and George Washington’s troops leave Valley Forge in pursuit. At this moment, Jamie Fraser returns from a presumed watery grave to discover that his best friend has married his wife, his illegitimate son has discovered (to his horror) who his father really is, and his beloved nephew, Ian, wants to marry a Quaker. Meanwhile, Jamie’s wife, Claire Randall, and his sister, Jenny, are busy picking up the pieces.

The Frasers can only be thankful that their daughter Brianna and her family are safe in twentieth-century Scotland. Or not. In fact, Brianna is searching for her own son, who was kidnapped by a man determined to learn her family’s secrets. Her husband, Roger, has ventured into the past in search of the missing boy . . . never suspecting that the object of his quest has not left the present. Now, with Roger out of the way, the kidnapper can focus on his true target: Brianna herself.

This was one of my favorite books (if not the best) in the series. So glad I wasn’t disappointed and feel settled after finishing this long series.

  • Book 8

While I have enjoyed reading these 8 novels, I feel like the author ultimately “lost” Claire’s character. Claire’s unique way of looking at the world which was so riveting in the first 3 books, and her 20th century outlook and voice, has been long silenced. I am tired of hearing her repetitious trite words....”I love you Jamie”....and “Sweetheart” when referring to her patients. Equally annoying is her ‘oath’ constantly thrown in the reader’s face as an excuse for her own inaction. Additionally, Lord John’s character has lost his depth of compassion, and he has become superficial. I hope the 9th book will surprise me and bring the characters back to the outstanding depth and realistically human thoughts, feelings, hopes and dreams that they possessed early on and which made reading about them worthwhile. Frankly, throughout...I wanted to get back to Bree, Roger, Jim, and Mandy in the 1980s and their more interesting plot line, hoping for SOME research on their part that would make the plot development interesting and to introduce clues in support of what was happening in 1778. Unfortunately, that never materialized.

I tried to leave a lengthy review on the outlander but also including the whole series. I had a lot to say but this page would not let me submit. I will keep trying because I think you’d want to see what I wrote. And just so you know the whole series is absolutely beyond wonderful! Thank you and I am so looking forward to your next book.

Excellent book. The series have been extremely good. I had started with watching the first three parts of outlander on TV. Then decided to read all the books before I watched more. I love seeing the sequencing difference in the two. I can’t wait to watch the other parts of Outlander and compare more. Both are highly recommended!!! The reading first then watching gives it a perspectively difference that makes since for both. Enjoy!!!

Reading the Outlander novels is not like reading a story, though there is a story line, it's like having the rare privilege of looking into another persons life. The story is fascinating, but what makes it readable after 1000+ pages is the author makes you apart of the ordinary in extraordinary circumstance. I can't wait until the ninth book is finished.

My sister-in-law recommended that I read the first book, "Outlander", because she thought I might enjoy reading the novel. That was an understatement. I have read each of Diana Gabaldon's novels repeatedly and often. "Outlander" itself has been read so often, the book is falling apart. Her most recent novel, "Written in My Own Heart's Blood" is a brilliant addition to the series. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading Claire and Jamie's continuing love story and I will be anxiously awaiting the next installment in their timeless adventures. I was especially heartened by the ending to this most recent novel. I don't want to spoil the ending for others, but I can't wait for another novel! I just re-read this novel and it was just as brilliant the second time around! The

While the excellence of language and characters that I have come to expect from a Gabaldon novel are here, along with the compelling story, this one is full of holes and inconsistencies. Characters emerge in places where they have no reason to be. And they behave in ways that their access to information does not justify. I do sincerely hope that we have not heard the last from Fraser's Ridge. There do seem to be a few tantalizing threads left untucked. It would be a shame to loose touch with such treasured friends. But I would hope for more in the way of continuity moving forward...
