Description

The long-awaited explosive climax to the first arc of the #1 New York Times bestselling Stormlight Archive—the iconic epic fantasy masterpiece that has sold more than 10 million copies, from acclaimed bestselling author Brandon Sanderson.

Dalinar Kholin challenged the evil god Odium to a contest of champions with the future of Roshar on the line. The Knights Radiant have only ten days to prepare—and the sudden ascension of the crafty and ruthless Taravangian to take Odium’s place has thrown everything into disarray.

Desperate fighting continues simultaneously worldwide—Adolin in Azir, Sigzil and Venli at the Shattered Plains, and Jasnah in Thaylenah. The former assassin, Szeth, must cleanse his homeland of Shinovar from the dark influence of the Unmade. He is accompanied by Kaladin, who faces a new battle helping Szeth fight his own demons . . . and who must do the same for the insane Herald of the Almighty, Ishar.

At the same time, Shallan, Renarin, and Rlain work to unravel the mystery behind the Unmade Ba-Ado-Mishram and her involvement in the enslavement of the singer race and in the ancient Knights Radiant killing their spren. And Dalinar and Navani seek an edge against Odium’s champion that can be found only in the Spiritual Realm, where memory and possibility combine in chaos. The fate of the entire Cosmere hangs in the balance.

Felt a bit off compared to the other books and maybe it was anticipation. I also thing the modern world might have slipped in and broken my immersion too many times. Although the 10 day structure was cool I did truly miss the original structure of 5 parts. Excited for stormlight 6 and think this book will age very well as long as Brando keeps writing.
  • Sanderson went from writing great books to pushing an LGBTQ+ political agenda.

Around 500 pages in I started to get a picture of how blatant the agenda in this book is… I loved the previous books, but this one took a turn for the worst and I have no interest in reading the rest of this book or any of the others now. In general, it’s not smart to insert divisive political opinions into an otherwise popular franchise, particularly ones that decisively alienate a massive portion of the population due to their sincerely held religious beliefs. Beyond that, for a guy who’s been writing books about truth and self discovery to not know the difference between a man and a woman— which there are clear and irrefutable scientific differences— well, I guess I’m not interested in reading books based on truth and self discovery from a guy who obviously has no idea which way is up. So, I’m done. I’ll read something else.
  • More Disappointing than my first sexual encounter

Cringe. Therapy for dummies by dummies. Not the “Sanderlanche” but “Sandercringe”. All that was less cringy than this book. It’s a 1 star because of my anticipation. Did not live up to the hype for me. It has made me question the first four books. Where they actually as good as I remember?
  • Meh

I have loved this series up until now but this slog has shifted my feelings quite a bit on where this story is heading. Certainly has a couple good moments, but overall a poor showing to end the first half of the series. Never skimmed so many sections out of boredom in my life. Godawful dialog, the constant POV jumping gets so old, and every single character being soooo in their feelings every freaking second had me debating if its even worth it to finish.
  • A slog..

I read through the entire book, but, unlike every other Sanderson title this was an absolute slog to get through. All the previous books were nearly impossible for me to put down, but this one required me to take breaks because of the sheer force of will required to read through all of the pages of filler to follow the actual storyline. It seems clear that Sanderson’s views have shifted, but I think that he would have been better served by issuing a public statement and maintaining the narrative integrity of his books, instead of diminishing a great story with this “everything, everywhere, is political” ideology.
  • Don’t get where all the negativity is coming from…

Granted I’m only halfway through the book at this point, I think it’s a great book. Honestly maybe even my favorite in the series so far. I have zero issues with the changing viewpoints. For me it moves things along. I have never been a huge fan of Szeth’s character but I’m enjoying his back story and this whole arc of his story. I don’t think the homosexuality in the story is egregious or heavy handed at all by where I’m at in the book. Maybe it gets more prominent later but it’s still only a very small portion of the story and doesn’t take anything away from the book for me. People need to grow up. I can’t wait to get to the end and although I’m not much of a re-reader I might give this one a second go around. Will update my review when finished.

It is one thing to add homosexuality into the author's world. But to include women claiming to be men & vice versa is really really bad!! For me this book has almost ruined the whole cosmere and gave this book a 2* rating. Hopefully he doesnt do this again in his next book
  • Might Be My Favorite Book In The Series

Somehow, a 1,330 page book felt like a, relatively, very quick read. Once again Sanderson’s character writing is incredible I do feel like this book could of used more editing but it’s almost entirely in the beginning The themes are way too heavy handed Certain things felt like pandering and crammed in My score is still 4/5 because of how little those negatives affect this book’s overall quality

It was an awesome read. It was long, I must admit, but I do not know how anybody could hate on this book. Extremely satisfying to finish.

I absolutely adore this series, but I must admit, this book was a bit more challenging to read compared to the others. I absolutely adore the character development of Adolin and Shallan. However, the most significant issue I had with the book was the short sections on each character’s POV stories. It felt like I was abruptly shifted to a different character’s perspective as soon as I got into one. I believe this was due to the 10-day storyline. I did enjoy the book’s ending and found the Adolin storyline particularly captivating.

After the 3rd or 4th consecutive chapter of woke garbage being shoved in my face , I quit.
  • Best in the series so far!

This is my favorite book in the series so far. The only complaint I have is that Shallan is in it. But at least Sanderson found a way to stop her from ruining Adolin’s storyline too.
  • A rambling mess.

Hundreds of pages to cover 10 days of time, introduce new characters and tear down favorites like Kaladin. Now the story continues through books 6-10? No. Way.

A fantastic arc comes to a legendary conclusion. I loved all of these books so much and the journey these characters go on is nothing short of amazing!
  • Disappointing

I loved the other stormlight archive books. This one fell short. Too much internal dialogue and self reflection and discussion of mental health. Not enough action - in terms of things actually happening and interesting reveals, it felt like 1/5th of one of the other books. I read it to get some closure, but it wasn’t that fun.
  • I. Am. Not. Happy.

WAY too much self help psychobabble. Hundreds and hundreds of pages of it. Also, ridiculous amount of modern terminology, like “therapist.” At one point a character asks the person who said it, what it means, and he said “I don’t know.” Wow. A real let down. I have more to say but I’m too upset.

I'm gonna have to come back in a year and re-read this to catch the depth and breadth of this conclusion to ARC 1. It is a great read with more than usual detail included to explain Roshar and the players therein, as well as touching Roshar's place in the cosmere.
