Description
Pride and Prejudice is a novel by Jane Austen, first published in 1813. The story follows the main character Elizabeth Bennet as she deals with issues of manners, upbringing, morality, education, and marriage in the society of the landed gentry of early 19th-century England. Elizabeth is the second of five daughters of a country gentleman living near the fictional town of Meryton in Hertfordshire, near London.
Though the story is set at the turn of the 19th century, it retains a fascination for modern readers, continuing near the top of lists of "most loved books" such as The Big Read. It has become one of the most popular novels in English literature and receives considerable attention from literary scholars. Modern interest in the book has resulted in a number of dramatic adaptations and an abundance of novels and stories imitating Austen's memorable characters or themes. To date, the book has sold some 20 million copies worldwide.
As Anna Quindlen wrote,
Pride and Prejudice is also about that thing that all great novels consider, the search for self. And it is the first great novel that teaches us this search is as surely undertaken in the drawing room making small talk as in the pursuit of a great white whale or the public punishment of adultery.
Reviews
4.5/5
5By CassieAlsoCassRounding up to 5 because Books doesn’t allow me to half stars, and a 4 does not do it justice. This was the first time I read a book after having seen the film. This book was nearly perfect and added so much more to my experience watching the film. The reason it’s not fully a 5/5, 10/10, crème de la crème, is because I do wish book Darcy had the same level of passion as film Darcy did at the final confrontation and engagement. That’s not to say he was passionLESS, but he wasn’t AS passionate.Pride and Prejudice
5By Jiyoon Y.Delightful to enjoy at best :)Blue print of enemies to lovers
3By ameliax3I see why everyone wants a Mr.Darcy 🥹 now I want me one too. Though, he was kinda rude in the beginning 😆 Elizabeth is funny, & her father! ADORBS. But in all honesty, this book made me feel dumb, the style of writing was so complex, I had a hard time with it. It took a really some time, and lots of rereading and dictionary to fully comprehend 😅😅 Time to go watch the movie again (2005 version)🩷<3
5By DurskulMy absolute favorite book.Shallow characters!!!
1By nana🤣Mr. Darcy is written to be the man of every girl’s dreams right? I mean he is like the standard for what a man should be! WRONG! He is so shallow and not even a real man. I would hate to marry someone like him.One of the all time best
5By BANDITNCADEI have read this book several times. I love it, as I do many of the classics, but this is one of the best. It never gets old. You will find yourself laughing all over again at Mr. and Mrs. Bennett, and bite your nails over the situation with Lydia. Does Bingley love Jane? And what will become of Darcy and Elizabeth. Ah it is all excitement and astonishment!Omg
5By Mae-LizI just have a thing for classics.... 🤭Beautiful and eloquent
