Description
A #1 New York Times Bestseller
From #1 New York Times bestselling author Julia Quinn comes the story of Daphne Bridgerton, in the first of her beloved Regency-set novels featuring the charming, powerful Bridgerton family, now a series created by Shondaland for Netflix.
In the ballrooms and drawing rooms of Regency London, rules abound. From their earliest days, children of aristocrats learn how to address an earl and curtsey before a prince—while other dictates of the ton are unspoken yet universally understood. A proper duke should be imperious and aloof. A young, marriageable lady should be amiable…but not too amiable.
Daphne Bridgerton has always failed at the latter. The fourth of eight siblings in her close-knit family, she has formed friendships with the most eligible young men in London. Everyone likes Daphne for her kindness and wit. But no one truly desires her. She is simply too deuced honest for that, too unwilling to play the romantic games that captivate gentlemen.
Amiability is not a characteristic shared by Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings. Recently returned to England from abroad, he intends to shun both marriage and society—just as his callous father shunned Simon throughout his painful childhood. Yet an encounter with his best friend’s sister offers another option. If Daphne agrees to a fake courtship, Simon can deter the mamas who parade their daughters before him. Daphne, meanwhile, will see her prospects and her reputation soar.
The plan works like a charm—at first. But amid the glittering, gossipy, cut-throat world of London’s elite, there is only one certainty: love ignores every rule...
This novel includes the second epilogue, a peek at the story after the story.
Reviews
I never read
5By Whim1954romances, but I had been intrigued by the cover art fashion. I will say this was a sweet but predictable storyline. And the hero was technically raped. But I took the time to write this review because I did enjoy it.love!
5By victoriasuxxlove the show, and love the book! can’t wait to read more of the series to compare them to the show :)Brilliant!
5By 💕Ariel💕Absolutely wonderful! I started this to read in comparison to the show and was very happy with it!lovely
5By nonbinarybaristaI am someone who watched the series first and it was wonderful to get a more in-depth version of the characters and storyThe text is a tiny sliver of the screen making this impossible to read.
1By MellybeemeEach like is 1.5 words. I hope someone at Apple fixes thisBliss
5By Que Que ✨The series on Netflix brought me here and as I loved the show I fell in love with the book as well Julia Quinn is now one of my favorite authorsGreat book.
5By LipvixensVery passionate and easy to read book. Very different from the show. But explains things way better and let’s you see each perspective.Great reading
5By Nina the dreamer❤️Good read other than…
3By andrea brooklynnOverall I really enjoyed this book! I’ve watched the show as it’s come out over the years and always enjoyed it, so I had no doubts that I’d enjoy the book. I will say that I found the relationship between Simon and Daphne seems to progress much fast in the book than the show, which I don’t love simply because I’m more of a slow burn gal. ‼️BIG SPOILERS & SA TW BELOW FOR THOSE WHO HAVE READ YET OR WATCHED THE SHOW ‼️ Beware CHAPTERS 17-18!!! Daphne’s way of having Simon … 👀 … inside of her is MUCH different in the book than in the show. In the book, Simon’s half asleep and still a bit drunk when it happens, and Daphne essentially takes advantage/assaults him. It was shocking to me and a bit triggering, and I wish there would have been a bit of a warning somewhere in the beginning of the book or chapter. Thank God the show handles the act differently.Loved it!
5By tnknewman01Loved it but wish it continued a little bit longer with this dashing young man…if good looking was against the law he would be in prison lol!!Amazing!!
5By BunnyNoxI am somewhat biased in my review since I’m a lover of romance and period pieces but I think Quinn is a spectacular writer!! I cannot wait to read the next books in this series!!Wonderful book!
4By MoeePoI enjoyed the story, especially after watching the show. It was nice to get to learn more about each character. I will say chapter 18 caught me off guard and was very uncomfortable to read, obviously I didn’t enjoy this scene in the show, but the book makes it a little harder to get through. That would be the reason for 4/5 stars.Enjoyed
5By mongdunnA nice easy enjoyable story100/10
5By YitneyIt was so good ! Some scenes I wish we could’ve experienced like the TV show, but excellent book. Highly recommendAmazing book!
5By Makeupgeek22I definitely recommend this book if you like the show! Both equally great!Loved it!
5By K8echristineI loved this book! Very different from the show, but the books are always better. Some people put a trigger warning on this book, but if you are triggered by fictional characters in a story then you need to get a life.Trigger Warning!
1By BrimleyBThe book should come with a warning for nonconsensual sex/marital rape. Super triggering.Ran to the books
5By KatieFWEnjoyableUnderwhelming
1By krbf11This book had potential to be great. The story lacked depth that seemingly would have been so easily reached. There are hundreds of scenarios which could have come into play between the characters, character building, details in the romance but also what the marriage impacts, a historical view. Anything really, other than the drab and clear plot of girl meets boy, girl dreams of marriage, boy dreams of girl, they live happily ever after.
