Description

Horn of Africa. Ethiopia, Somalia (Somaliland), Djibouti, Eritrea. The time has come, it appeared, for me to go on a trip to a country at a brink of war and to a country generally considered to be the most dangerous place on the planet. And to a country that was threatening the former and being actually at war with the latter. All in the same trip. Oh, and to a country, which claimed to be a true, peaceful paradise squeezed between the three. Somalia, considered the most dangerous country on Earth, (at the time of writing) would have never been on my list of holiday destinations. However, the part of Somalia I wanted to go, Somaliland, was waiting for a formal recognition from the international society as a separate, sovereign and independent state. They were working very hard to distinguish themselves from Somalia. It was paramount for them to make sure it was safe to travel around there, otherwise the international society would not be so lenient, rushing to recognise their independence.

This book describes the author’s personal and unique experiences whilst his trip to Ethiopia, Somaliland, Djibouti and Eritrea in 2007 and 2008, including an episode of hitching a flight out of one of the countries. The book contains over 180 original photographs taken during the trip, practical information and description of places to stay, eat, drink, socialise with the locals and explore. It covers the following places: Addis Ababa, Bahir Dar, The Blue Nile Falls, Gondar, Lalibela, Aksum, Harar, Kolubi, Hargeisa, Las Geel, Dhagax Guure, Djibouti City, Asmara and Massawa.
