Description

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout comes book three in her beloved Flesh and Fire series…
The only thing that can save the realms now is the one thing more powerful than the Fates.
After a startling betrayal ends with both Sera and the dangerously seductive ruler of the Shadowlands she has fallen madly in love with being held captive by the false King of the Gods, there is only one thing that can free Nyktos and prevent the forces of the Shadowlands from invading Dalos and igniting a War of Primals.
Convincing Kolis won’t be easy, though – not even with a lifetime of training. While his most favored Revenant is insistent that she is nothing more than a lie, Kolis’s erratic nature and twisted sense of honor leave her shaken to the core, and nothing could’ve prepared her for the cruelty of his Court or the shocking truths revealed. The revelations not only upend what she has understood about her duty and the very creation of the realms but also draw into question exactly what the true threat is. However, surviving Kolis is only one part of the battle. The Ascension is upon her, and Sera is out of time.
But Nyktos will do anything to keep Sera alive and give her the life she deserves. He’ll even risk the utter destruction of the realms, and that’s exactly what will happen if he doesn’t Ascend as the Primal of Life. Yet despite his desperate determination, their destinies may be out of their hands.
But there is that foreseen unexpected thread—the unpredictable, unknown, and unwritten. The only thing more powerful than the Fates…

  • Hard to get through

So much repeat story. Sera makes a bad choice, Kolis punishes her repeat for 3/4ths of the book. The ending is nice but this was a lot of pages for very little to happen.

Really not a lot happening for the first 75% of the book. Honestly could’ve skipped it. Thank goodness the end was good.

This book felt like this to me: A teacher gave their students a paper to write. The teacher told the students that the paper had to be 825+ pages long. One student had a great story but it was only 400 pages. They filled the rest with repetition and lots of sex. The end. Overall, the worst of the series so far.

Up until this book, I was hooked to the series… then I got to this one and I am debating on if I even want to continue the series or not. The plot just drags on and on! Sera is trying to work up the courage to do what she needs to do to get out of a sticky situation for far too long and doesn’t even end up doing it. The sex scenes at the end are just too much as well.

A mixed bag of emotions and pacing. While the series excels at delivering heartfelt moments—I found myself crying several times—it also drags in places, particularly with dialogue that left me skimming more than I’d like. If you’re curious about the book, I’d recommend borrowing it from the library rather than purchasing it. One element that detracted from my experience was the attempt to inject humor through modern-day references. These moments felt jarring, like a fourth-wall break, pulling me out of the immersive fantasy world. Though marketed as romantic fantasy, this book leans heavily into erotica. While the early sex scenes are steamy and engaging, they eventually become repetitive and over-the-top, making them more exhausting than enticing. For me, it was a bit much.
  • Good book, took to long to land

The story was good as was the character building, but it felt like it took too long to get to the point. Sera’s imprisonment felt like it dragged. Once that resolved it picked up and the story got better.
  • Took forever.

I found myself literally skipping paragraphs and pages to get to sustenance. The plot is fantastic, the ever rambling language in between action is mind numbing. Plot = great. Characters = great. Extra pages of nothing? Not so great
  • Wasn’t my favorite one, but still good!

The first chapters were easy to get through, the next 25 or so chapters were a little more difficult, then the last chapters were easy to get through again. Certain things that I can’t spoil just seemed repetitive so I ended up skimming the middle of this book, which I haven’t done with the others.
  • Another amazing book

Loved this book just as much as the others. This book was harder to read because it felt real and raw, surviving trauma and reading about characters to undergo it is HARD. This book was incredible and was very well written.
  • I love this series and its author!!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading all three books and can't wait to start the fourth! Sera’s and Ash’s story is an epic prelude to the subsequent ‘Ash and Blood’ series.

Like others have said this book could have been much shorter. I am halfway through the book, and NOTHING has happened. It’s Sera making the same decisions over and over and over and over again, while thinking about how she should make different decisions. The story itself is so interesting, and the world building in the series is amazing. I really hope the next books in the Flesh & Fire and Blood & Ash series are better. I would like to keep reading them, but I hope JLA reads the feedback from the readers.

Yep I gave it 5 stars even though there was way too much thinking that I skipped over. Guess I am truly hooked.

This prequel series is absolutely amazing. The characters are so alluring, plot is 100%, and the writing is phenomenal. I would recommend this series to anyone and everyone that would listen.
  • Horrible

I’ve read horrible stories before but this one takes the #1 spot. There’s only two good chapters, 37 and 38. The book is drawn out and filled with useless rambling from start to finish. 80% of the book is Sera thinking. The last 3/4 chapters is soft porn. They literally have sex for 3 chapters. The author filled in a lot of the empty pointless narrative by over detailing Sera’s day…i.e “how she brushes her teeth, how she ate her food, how she decides what to wear for the day”. You never get a complete story on a few characters, like what happened to Vesse, Callum, Nye…hell Kolis! The book just ends. She’s literally in a cage for 70% of the book. There’s a reason why it’s $7.99 and that’s even too much to waste on an unedited, horribly written book… this is not a slow burn, it’s not even a slow fizzle… it’s a never lit match. Yeah this author played in our faces with this mess
  • Kinda disappointed

I am honestly a little upset, I have loved every book in both series and don’t think twice about diving into this one. Unfortunately the hype was overrated.. it takes until page 345 to start getting good. Most of the book if not half is about kolis and honestly I could have cared less. Just sayin
  • Disappointing, worst book of the series

There are a lot of comments in general about this book and I have to agree with all of them that are criticisms. This feels disconnected from everything the author had established. Do we need to spend 2/3 of the book reading only torment and sexual assault? No. Once that part ends it’s just chapter after chapter of repeated conversations until the final 6 chapters. But even those end up repeating each other all over again. This was a total waste. So much of this book was unnecessary and feels like JLA lacked an editor telling her to cut it all down. I had loved this prequel series until now. This is just not good. It’s poor, lazy writing. Like someone who just doesn’t want to end their story so they go off the rails.
  • Trigger warning

I have loved every book in this series, but this one should come with a HUGE trigger warning for survivors of SA/DV. The story was beautiful as always, but this book was hard to get through as a survivor.
