Description

The "queen of the summer novel" explores the power of community, family, and honesty-and proves that even from the ashes of sorrow new love can take flight (Kirkus Reviews).

A warm June evening, a local tradition: the students of Nantucket High have gathered for a bonfire on the beach. What begins as a graduation night celebration ends in tragedy after a horrible car crash leaves the driver, Penny Alistair, dead, and her twin brother in a coma. The other passengers, Penny's boyfriend, Jake, and her friend Demeter, are physically unhurt--but the emotional damage is overwhelming. Questions linger about what happened before Penny took the wheel.

As summer unfolds, startling truths are revealed about the survivors and their parents, the secrets kept, promises broken, and hearts betrayed.

I started this book months ago and just finished it a couple of days ago. It was one of the most boring and drawn out books that I have ever read!!! The characters were pathetic and way too much time dedicated to each one. Do not waste your money on this one!!!

I would say that this is my favorite of the 3 I have read by this author. The characters were memorable and well-described. I loved it, and I had to keep reading! Great ending!!

As with all of Elin Hilderbrand's novels, this one owned me from page one. Living not too far away from Nantucket, I love the familiar places mentioned as well as the rich relationships among the characters. At the end of each novel I declare that one my favorite!

Loved all of her other books, but this seems to lack something. Halfway through and I could take it or leave it. Love reading about Nantucket, but am a little bored with this.
  • I have read all of your books!

Elin Hilderbrand made me fall in love with Nantucket in Summerland. The author has such a beautiful way with words. I grasped onto every detail... it was of those books that you read carefully and savor each page because you never want it to end. Also, each character was so developed that they became real to me. This was my first novel from this author and I'm looking forward to my next! I highly recommend this to adults and older women. Not so much a book for teens only because I think they are yearning for a bit more drama and romance than what this book entails. I loved it! I only wish there was a sequel!

The story line was good but I felt that the book starting dragging in the middle and that it never picked up at the end.
  • Eloquently written

Elin does a great job of bringing each character to life. I love how she fills in the gaps and gives us the perspective of each character in the same incident. Her use of detail is astonishing and my mouth watered several times at her accurate descriptions of Zoe's meals. However there are about 3 instances when she calls jake, Jordan by mistake and it's surprising that her editors did not pick up on this. This book makes me want to move to a small island, cook, sing and most importantly, be in love.
  • The best!!
