Description

Wyoming Game Warden Joe Pickett investigates a mysterious death at a secret remote high-tech facility in this riveting new novel from #1 New York Times bestseller C.J. Box.

When a prominent University of Wyoming professor goes missing, authorities are stumped. That is, until Joe Pickett makes two surprising discoveries while hunting down a wounded elk on his district as an epic spring storm descends upon him. First, he finds the professor’s vehicle parked on a remote mountainside. Then Joe finds the professor’s frozen and mutilated body. When he attempts to learn more, his investigation is obstructed by federal agents, extremists, and Governor Colter Allen.

Nate Romanowski is rebuilding his falconry company—and financing this through crypto mining with the assistance of Geronimo Jones. He’s then approached by a shadowy group of local militant activists that is gaining in power and influence, and demanding that Wyoming join other western states and secede from the union—by force, if necessary. They ask Nate to throw in with them, but he’s wary. Should he trust them, or is he being set up?

As a storm of peril gathers around them, Joe and Nate confront it in different ways—and maybe, for the first time, on opposite sides.

Box is a good story, tortured into him from an ex Wyoming sheriff. A little too contrived. Ending for me, but getting there was fun.
  • Extremely disappointing

I used to love CJBox books, but since he has unashamedly fallen into radical right wing political commentary, I can’t stand them. I wish I hadn’t bought this book
  • Right-wing drivel

It all falls apart in chapter 22. The author believes that the groups that have acted to overthrow elected officials are all part of the deep state. He actually uses that term. These are just well-meaning patriots who’ve lost their jobs. They would never consider insurrection if they weren’t enticed and entrapped by the FBI. Except one of the conspirators is a sheriff’s deputy who plans to murder our hero the game warden. So how do you explain the sheriff’s deputy if the whole domestic terror threat is a figment of the libtards’ (another term used by the author) imagination? Inconsistent, inane drivel. Don’t bother.
  • A Little Political but Still Good.

4 Stars. I love the Pickett books and this one was no exception. Other than being a little preachy politically, I guess. I get enough of that daily in this country on every news platform in existence. Still, Joe and the gang were predictably enjoyable. The mystery was a good one and I can tell you it will be a quick little thriller to enjoy. Definitely ready for the next one.

A really slow to develop story with a sub par ending. I kept reading just to see if it got good knowing some of the author’s stories. I waited and waited and then it ended. Not my favorite by this author.

Boorishly Booooring! You know I don’t know who wrote the screenplay for the streaming Joe Pickett series or who is actually directing the most boring childish and ridiculous……oh never mind like the director I’ve. List my way

Not the best by Box but not the worst. A lot of politics. Is the author running short of ideas? After all you can only have so many game poachers and so many blizzards in the state of Wyoming.

I thought it was very well written, kept me reading, I felt as if I were apart of the story. This is my first read by Cox. I will look for others. The political aspect is what we are Iiving today. My research tells me this story has a lot of truths in the fiber of the story.

Wyoming Game Warden Joe Pickett always does what he feels is the right thing to do. Sort of a Dudley do right. Very often it lands him in trouble but he always manages to clear himself of any wrong doing. Sometimes just barely. This story evolves around Chinese spies radical anti government characters and a host of other unsavory as well as good people. An excellent and entertaining read!! Enjoyed immensely!

Fun book. Quick read with fast pace. If you have read thru the other Pickett books, you’ll enjoy the continuum of the Pickett family and friends. Will definitely be looking forward to the next installment of Joe Pickett & Co.

Absolutely the worst book in the series. I have read them all and enjoyed them. This is an absolute waste of time and money.

    I enjoyed the book.
  • Great local color, contrived plot

This book started out strongly but faltered midway through as the cast of characters and unbelievable plot contrivances multiplied. Given the rise of anti-Asian sentiment in this country, I found the introduction of the Chinese elements dismaying and unnecessary.
