SAMPLE EXCERPT:
"
“What were the inspiration and the creation process behind this book?”

Some of Ann Patchett’s books were inspired while working on her previous books. While researching for Bel Canto, she was supposed to go to Manaus, capital of Amazonas State in Brazil, with celebrated soprano Renée Fleming to hear her sing there. But the event was cancelled and so was the trip. In Manaus, there was the Teatro Amazonas, an ornate opera house built in 1896 by a rubber baron, and “rubber barons” ended up as backgrounders in the State of Wonder book. There is also that dramatic scene in the theatre that made it to the book.

Secondly, Ms. Patchett became interested in malaria in that it was curable-but only to those who could pay. It was a political and moral kind of disease that is, in her own words, “deep novelist territory.” While working on Run, she read a lot about evolutionary biology to build her ichthyologist character. She began to play with the idea of a novel where people would focus on an endeavor that would be very lucrative (a miracle fertility drug, for example) but would be replaced in the end with something most worthwhile compared to whatever promise of monetary gain there is… “a moral leap, not just an ethical one.” "
