Re-read the original book RIGHT AFTER reading this book!
The original book suddenly became much richer and more enticing after I finished this Behind the Story, I HAD to open up the original book once more! What a way to increase the reading experience! Highly recommended!

It took Sue Monk Kidd over three and a half years to write The Secret Life of Bees. This book was heavily influenced by her hometown, Sylvester, Georgia, and the years she spent there as an adolescent. Her family lived in the same home that her great-great-grandparents had lived in, surrounded by pinelands and red fields. It was a small town and everyone knew one another. She would buy coke and a pair of socks and even before she reached home, her mother would already know about both purchases. The town had church socials, high school football games and young Kidd would attend private manners lessons from her grandmother. (11) 
The 1960s was a difficult time in the South. There was segregation and the worst injustices. In 1964, there were voter registration divides, boiling racial tensions and erupting awareness to the cruelty of racism. The memories from this time stayed with Kidd. She was never the same again after the summer of 1964..."
