Re-read the original book RIGHT AFTER reading this book!
The original book suddenly became much richer and more enticing after I finished this Behind the Story, I HAD to open up the original book once more! What a way to increase the reading experience! Highly recommended!

Blum is of German, Dutch and Jewish descent. She worked for Steven Spielberg’s Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation for four years and interviewed Holocaust survivors as part of her job. As a daughter of a Jewish broadcast journalist and a German concert pianist, she has always been fascinated by her heritage and the Second World War. Therefore, Those Who Save Us is a World War II mother-daughter story inspired by her German and Jewish heritage and by the interviews she conducted while working at the Shoah Foundation. The novel is suffused with details about life in wartime Germany which she gained from Holocaust survivors in the foundation. Since Blum, similar to her parents, was raised in the US, there weren’t any immediate family members that experienced the Holocaust personally. Her dad said there were two great-aunts that had perished, but he did not know them personally and didn’t even know their names. Neither did he have any photographs. She asked him this after reading The Diary of Anne Frank...
