Re-read the original book RIGHT AFTER reading this book!
The original book suddenly became much richer and more enticing after I finished this Behind the Story, I HAD to open up the original book once more! What a way to increase the reading experience! Highly recommended!

Joan Didion wrote The Year of Magical Thinking as her memoir of grieving after her a heart attack took away her husband of 39 years. John Gregory Dunne (May 25, 1932 – December 30, 2003) was an American novelist, screenwriter and literary critic was a husband, a father and uncle when he died at the age of 71.
It was indeed a difficult year for Joan Didion. Their adopted daughter, Quintana Roo, had fallen into a comma after being treated for pneumonia and septic shock. Even after showing signs of recovery, she followed her father in 2005 at the age of 39.
Joan Didion wrote her memoir 10 months after the death of her husband. In the book, she described how she became “crazy” after her life partner was taken from her. She talked about keeping his shoes in the closet because he would need it when he comes back. She described driving miles away so she can avoid places that may bring back memories of her life with her husband. She talked about the American way of grief and called it evasiveness posing as courage."
