Description

Stephen King’s classic #1 New York Times bestseller and the basis for the massively successful films It: Chapter One and It: Chapter Two as well as inspiration for HBO Max’s series It: Welcome to Derry—about seven adults who return to their hometown to confront a nightmare they had first stumbled upon as teenagers...an evil without a name: It.

Welcome to Derry, Maine. It’s a small city, a place as hauntingly familiar as your own hometown. Only in Derry the haunting is real.

They were seven teenagers when they first stumbled upon the horror. Now they are grown-up men and women who have gone out into the big world to gain success and happiness. But the promise they made twenty-eight years ago calls them reunite in the same place where, as teenagers, they battled an evil creature that preyed on the city’s children. Now, children are being murdered again and their repressed memories of that terrifying summer return as they prepare to once again battle the monster lurking in Derry’s sewers.

Readers of Stephen King know that Derry, Maine, is a place with a deep, dark hold on the author. It reappears in many of his books, including Bag of Bones, Hearts in Atlantis, and 11/22/63. But it all starts with It.

“Stephen King’s most mature work” (St. Petersburg Times), “It will overwhelm you…to be read in a well-lit room only” (Los Angeles Times).

Amazing read. At this point while I’m writing this I’m still on chapter 4. But so far it has been long. It’s a long book, and if you like long books, which I sure do, it will be amazing. And FYI: for all kids adults, chapter 3 is long. Not so long, but long. Amazing, parents said book before movie, so bye

Childhood trauma, how our pasts influence our present, children growing up into adults, evil and good, light and dark, real and unreal, primitive & animalistic…S.K. brings some disturbing truths to life in this page turner of a novel.

I have mixed feelings on this book. I think it’s overhyped but there is some great story, creativity, and characters. There is also some pretty scary and heartfelt moments. Really the only thing that bothered me was how messy and distorted the story felt but aside from that it’s good. If you like thrills and chills but also a great story about friendship and growing up then this story is meant for you.

This book just means so much to me. I went through a lot as a kid and I found this book in 1990 or so, and it gave me some hope. Hope that even though I was a kid, maybe I could overcome my own adversities. Thrilling from start to finish. One of my favorites from any author.

just never loses its suspense, poignancy, or triumph. How many times have I read and reread this book? Give it a few years, pick it back up again, and I’m lost. I need a bike.

Saw the movie before I read the book so kind of took away for the suspense but I love how the book goes so much more into detail and background information. The movies had me confused on was “IT” actually was but the book helped clear it up for me . Overall great book

I re-read It every few years. It’s like picking up an old friend. It is certainly about horror but it is more about childhood, friendship, and the power of both of those things. It awakens the reader to the everyday evil, as well as good, that exists in humanity but sometimes seems especially prevalent in small rural towns. Having read most of King’s work, I’ll say this is undoubtedly my all time favorite. I’m always sad to reach the end, and that feeling of melancholy nostalgia tends to stick with me for awhile, like it does when I remember my own childhood childhood.

For me, what makes this masterpiece of a book so special is not the horror aspect, but the relationships and the special connection between the seven people that make up The Loser’s Club. The monster is merely the engine that drives them together and drives the motivation for the main narrative. I love that King takes his time building up these characters so that you get to know them intimately and you feel for them and savor their interactions with one another. Such a perfect novel from start to finish. I do find myself skipping over some of the Derry history stuff, because I think drags on a bit too long and I think it could have been edited down. That aside, what a truly great novel, and one that I revisit every 2 years or so.
