Description
#1 New York Times bestselling author John Sandford's “haunting, unforgettable, ice-blooded thriller”* that introduced Lucas Davenport...
The killer was mad but brilliant.
He left notes with every woman he killed. Rules of murder: Never have a motive. Never follow a discernible pattern. Never carry a weapon after it has been used...So many rules to his sick, violent games of death.
But Lucas Davenport, the cop who’s out to get him, isn’t playing by the rules.
“Terrifying...Sandford has crafted the kind of trimmed-to-the-bone thriller that is hard to put down…scary...intriguing...unpredictable.”—Chicago Tribune
“Rules of Prey is so chilling that you’re almost afraid to turn the pages. So mesmerizing you cannot stop...A crackle of surprises.”—*Carl Hiaasen
“Sleek and nasty...A big scary, suspenseful read, and I loved every minute of it.”—Stephen King
“A cop and a killer you will remember for a long, long time.”—Robert B. Parker

5By CatchbigfishI just finished reading this book for the fifth time. I started following Lucas Davenport in 1990 and this character holds up over time. I have all of the books, eagerly awaiting the next one. Thank you John Sandford for many hours of entertainment.Deja vu, all over again

5By mat2ruleI read Rules of Prey in 1990. I just reread it (3/2024) and this book kept me just as enthralled as it did back in the day. Totally satisfying story!Nail biting
5By moliedogAnother masterpiece1st Lucas Davenport novel
5By DenverTwinI’m glad I finally got to read the first novel in this series. It has all the intensity of his other books. This was fast paced and I couldn’t guess the ending earlier in the book. I will definitely recommend Rules of Prey to friends.Media Circus?
4By d8thI finished all the Virgil Flowers books so I thought I’d start the Lucas Davenport series. I realize Sanford is a journalist, but I wasn’t ready for the detailed of media machinations in this book. Reporters battling, playing one against the other and on and on. I guess you write what you know. A good intro for the most part, I just hope in future novels, there’s more detecting and less reporting.Love to reas
4By Elaine2126I love murder mysteries, this one was more sinister than I’d like, but a good one.Derivative
2By Deja Vu2Too much fluff, poorly phrased passages at times, and too many ideas taken from Red Dragon.Another thriller. Always taut and detailed. Hard to put down. Lucas is flawed but irresistible.

5By Irishgal1934Masterful!ANY of Sanford's "Prey" books are worth the addiction...
5By KatiehawkeAfter reading #1, I was hooked. These are the type of well-written & intense books that once you fall in love with the main character(s) & get hooked on the story, next thing you know everything else around you stops & you're pretty much "living" the adventure. I prize my hardbound collection of Sanford's "Prey Candy"!!Top notch
5By joylpc24I love the Prey novels so much, I am rereading them, starting at the beginning. Lucas Davenport is an amazing character.Read them in Paper - OMG!!!
5By Mzldysth1John Camp (aka John Sandford) is a storyteller. That is the highest praise I can give an author. He weaves a story that draws from not only plotline, but from the character development. Each character is fully developed into an individual personality you can cheer for or cheerfully boo. There is nothing left to chance when crafting the personality of Lucas Davenport - Detective extraordinaire. These books are not fast or slow paced; they are methodically laid out to draw you into the suspense of the underlying crime(s) and hook you with the deviations into Lucas' personal life. When you know anything, you're trapped in the world of Lucas Davenport as told by John Camp.Wonderful
5By MattquistThis is my second John Sandford book, and I'm hooked. Masterful storytelling and a eye toward detail that just draws the reader in!Great read
