Sanford is becoming template. And really publisher, do ebooks need to cost as much as paper?

Agent Virgil Flowers is one of the best characters in fiction. Sanford does things a little different with this book. Among so many other things he makes a person kinda root for the bad guy. This is maybe his best work yet.

Worst ending ever and the book was way too long for the plot
  • Did Sanford run out of gas or just give up?

Usually like his books but not this one. Kept hoping it would get better as I got further along but it didn't. Save your money!

Not a lot of action. A few good spots but way too much filler. Not up to his usual standards.

Another home run for Sandford. I enjoy both Davenport and Flowers series. Well worth the purchase.
  • Another terrific Flowers yarn

As the Lucas Davenport character dries up, Virgil Flowers has become a really enjoyable protagonist, and I now prefer the Flowers books. This is the best one so far, with an interesting moral depth underlying the typically riveting police procedural and the usual snappy, realistic dialogue.

Virgil Flowers is quickly replacing Lucas Davenport as my favorite John Sandford hero. Virgil reminds me of a young Lucas. Keep 'em coming, John!
  • Good book!

For most of Sandford's books the snipe hunt signals the end of the story. In Mad River, the snipe hunt is the story. If you like most of this author's novels, you'll like this one too! Buy it!

I always enjoy john Sanford's books, and this was no exception. I love Virgil Flowers. I hope the next book he writes could be longer, more involved and bring back Lucas Davenport. But who ever is in it I will read it happily. Susandeb

I have loved all of Sandford's books, but this one really hits a nerve. The struggles of young people in this economy when they don't have the support and upbringing all children are entitled to is a tragedy in an affluent country. The moral questions law enforcement, at least the ones who choose to listen to their moral compass, are never ending. Do you have the right to enact judgment on people who really never had a shot? Murder is wrong, but at what point do we hold society accountable for some of this? Sandford has a way of writing a story that you can just read for the thrill of it or really delve into the human experience and psychology. Makes him one of the best writers of our time and one I will follow as long as he is writing. Several times while reading the book, I wanted to reach out and hug Virgil, he really seemed to struggle with the ethics and human dignity issues with this story, much like any real person would. Sandford manages to make fictitious people come to life which evokes all that great emotion and catharsis. Can't wait for Silken Prey!
