Description

Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers join forces to track down a ruthless killer who will do whatever it takes to keep the past buried, in this latest thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author John Sandford.

Doris Grandfelt, an employee at an accounting firm, was brutally stabbed to death . . . but nobody knew exactly where the crime took place. Her body was found the next night, dumped among a dense thicket of trees along the edge of an urban park, eight miles east of St. Paul, Minnesota. Despite her twin sister Lara Grandfelt’s persistent calls to the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the killer was never found.

Twenty years later, Lara has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Confronted with the possibility of her own death, she’s determined to find Doris’s killer once and for all. Finally taking matters into her own hands, she dumps the entire investigative file on every true crime site in the world and offers a $5 million reward for information leading to the killer’s arrest. Dozens of true crime bloggers show up looking for both new evidence and “clicks,” and Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers are called in to review anything that might be a new lead.

When one of the bloggers locates the murder weapon, Lucas and Virgil begin to uncover vital details about the killer’s identity. But what they don’t know is the killer lurks in plain sight, and with the true crime bloggers blasting every clue online, the killer can keep one step ahead. As the nation maneuvers the detectives closer to the truth, Lucas and Virgil will find that digging up Doris’s harrowing past might just get them buried instead.

Fantastic story until everything wrapped up in a few disappointing pages with no clear ending. We are left without a result of the trial which is huge. Seems like Sanford ran out of time and had to publish before he was actually finished. This book needed at least one additional chapter.

Let me start off by saying I love John’s books and love the Davenport and Flowers stories. And this book was amazing - until it wasn’t. Maybe it’s just me but I like my stories wrapped up. This one was so good - compelling, action packed, intriguing. And then - splat! John, please don’t let your advisors talk you into this again…

Another great Davenport/Flowers novel except…maybe there should have been a “To be continued” at the end of this book. At least I hope that the storyline will be continued. The murderer’s trial wasn’t concluded and we don’t know if Virgil decided to retire from the BCA after signing a new book deal with his publisher. Just an abrupt ending to an otherwise excellent book.

This book is missing about 25,000 words. Things are humming along, suspension building, and then the author starts dropping a bunch of summaries and ends the book with no conclusion. It’s kinda like you’ve been writing an essay for a month and it’s due tomorrow and you’re about 3/4 done and you just don’t care anymore. You wrap it up and send it off. The guy is 81 years old and I’m afraid just not up to the task at hand anymore.
  • So disappointing.

Nearly gave it three stars but the story was just too big to dumb down the ending and leave it undecided. Love Sandfprd”s writing, especially the Lucas/Virgil series. But this book was so very disappointing.

Classic Lucas and Virgil. Such a great storyline using the modern day internet sleuths. They didn’t have to pull a weapon, just websites!! If I am reading this correctly, between the lines and all, we may be coming to some kind of retirement for one of them. Say it isn’t so. I love this dynamic duo. Pulling into the storyline was Jenkins and Shrake. Is it the end of an era? Perfect book as always.
  • Good book, poor ending

Where is the rest of this book?? There is no ending or resolution - the story just STOPS! Wish I had never spent my money and time on this book!
  • Great book until the last page

Loved the book until the last page. The ending is an insult to the reader’s intelligence.
